Most of the letters in the collection are gossipy accounts of activities of family & friends in Virginia & South Carolina. Of interest are frequent mentions of Thomas Ritchie, and a letter describing Charleston on April 1, 1861. John C. Rutherfoord is a major correspondent. Others include Bradley Tyler Johnson and Thomas Staple Martin. The collection also contains a commonplace book, 1860-73, of religious sentiments, miscellaneous essays, and prayers, Vol. III of James Murdock's Institutes of ecclesiastical history, The olive branch by Matthew Cary, and King Nutcracker and Poer Reynold by Heinrich Hoffman.
